Gestalt principle similarity in music3/28/2024 ![]() It is believed that the association of gestalt principles with music will progress the musical perception in the direction of seeing the outline of the music and the rhythmic, melodic, harmonic structures which isconstituted by the metric and tonal units and in the direction of seeing the meaningful relationship between this structures. There seems to be the confirming opinions in this direction by the scanned resourches. Let us explore each principle, its underlying concepts, and its influence on users’ perceptions. ![]() The figure-ground principle provides the understanding of the relationship between musical theme, accompaniment and rhythmic structure while the other principles aforementioned assume an active role to define the periodical and structural features of a musical piece. These six foundational principles proximity, similarity, closure, continuity, figure-ground, and symmetry emerged from the field of psychology and have since been instrumental in shaping the world of UI design. The Gestalt principle of similarity benefits visual working memory. Similarity was defined relative to the principles of grouping by common colour and grouping by common shape. As a result of examined samples, it has been understood that the laws of figure-ground, proximity, similarity, common direction, simplicity, closure and grouping is effectively taken place in music and therefore, the presence of the arrangements based on the cognitive perception of the reader on notation. directly compared (combined or pitted against) with the Gestalt principle of similarity both of color and line width. The nature of the psychological processes that underlie the Gestalt principles of grouping by proximity and grouping by similarity is examined. ![]() This paper focuses on how individuals use the sense of touch (haptics) to group display elements using the Gestalt principles of similarity and proximity. Various resourches have been reviwed and assessed and some examples have been presented in this direction. The early studies of Gestalt principles of grouping were predominantly concerned with visual perception, although more recently they have been investigated for auditory perception. A connection between the gestalt fundamental principles and musical syntax has been tried to be established and this connection has been associated with the configuration fields of sight-reading abilitiy. Grouping can occur in both visual and auditory stimuli. In this article, the functioning of gestalt approach, one of the cognitive psychological approaches in music field, has been taken in hand and a descriptive method has been applied through resource scan for the data aggregation about the subject. The law of similarity states that similar things tend to appear grouped together. ![]()
